11/1 + 11/8: Mugs & Vases (handbuilding with clay)
6-9 pm Tuesdays
Nov 1, Nov 8, 2022
at Make Space Workshop & Classroom, St. Augustine, FL
In this 2 night workshop, students will handbuild ceramic pieces that are water tight and food safe, i.e glazed on the inside and/or out. Students will be provided with 8 lbs of tan or cream speckled clay to work with.
The first night of class will be a crash course into the fundamental pinching, coiling and slab rolling techniques of handbuilding. We will get to work right away on our vessels. Students can aim to make 2-6 pieces depending on size, function and intricacy of designs. There will be some slab templates for repeatable shapes available if free form creation is not your bag. The hand building portion must be finished during the first 3 hour class, pieces will be set to dry and fired for the following week.
The second and last night of class will be focused on surface decoration. Students will have access to a rainbow of underglaze colors and these glaze options: clear (for use overunderglazes or over plain clay) white & black. I will demonstrate how I create stencils with tape, vinyl and rubber latex for my glaze application and invite you to try on your own. Pieces will be fired and ready for pickup in approximately 2 weeks.
