10/26, 11/2 + 11/9: The ART of Screenprinting
6:30-9:30 Wednesdays
Oct 26, Nov 2, Nov 9 2022
Make Space Workshop & Classroom, St. Augustine Florida.
This is a 3-week in depth screenprinting course geared towards artists and designers. While you will have the opportunity to screenprint on tshirts if you wish, this class is more focused on the techniques and processes of image creation and experimentation with printing surfaces and ink application.
Each student will have 2 screens to work from during class. They will also be provided with a hinge clamp board, their own squeegee, acetate, basic ink colors, spray adhesive, and 6 boards/each to slide inside shirts. Students will provide their own printing surfaces (paper, wood, cotton shirts, thin canvas totes, ect...) + one roll of blue painters tape and a roll of paper towel (or shop rags.)
The first week will be a full walk through of the printing process and cover 3 distinct techniques of image application onto screens. There will be time to brainstorm print projects so bring any ides or sketches with you! Students will be provided with steps for half toning and access to photoshop on the studio computer if they wish to use it. Students may opt to hand draw images for the “photo” technique. They will also have the option to start on hand cut stencils and the screen drawing fluid process. At the end of class we will coat one or both of their screens with photo-emulsion to expose during the next class.
The second week will be devoted mainly to prep. We will burn any images using the pre-coated screens this night. All screens will be finished and ready to print by the end of night 2. Students will need to bring in printing surfaces to prep and plan for. All papers should be cut to size & shirts preloaded onto boards. Students are welcomed to mix custom colors from the basic inks provided. If time allows they may start printing of course!
The final class will be spent printing entirely. There will be an optional print exchange. If students wish to participate, they will be provided with 12 archival sheets of paper to print their image on. Prints will be numbered and signed as an edition and exchanged with other participating students.
At the end of our workshop, if you love this process and want to continue,
the basic set up (1 pre burned screen, board, squeegee, acetate) will be available for purchase for $60 and the second screen for an additional $25.
Students will receive an information packet via email one week before class starts to get their creative juices flowing.
